Then he began to throw books out. He yelled off the titles as he threw them, and sometimes commented on them, stating whether or not they were a good read. There were a lot of good titles he tossed out - Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Shakespeare. He threw the Bible out with a great deal of commentary.
The courtyard was littered with broken glass and books lay everywhere, some even stuck in the branches of a tree.
The fun ended abruptly when sirens filled the air and the police showed up. They handcuffed my neighbor and led him away. One policeman said that when he was asked, the guy said he had broken the windows because he thought he was suffocating. He had ripped his sink out, and trashed his entire apartment. I felt kind of sorry for him.
My neighbors and I observed the debris. There were books everywhere. Most looked like they had never been read.
Then we noticed smoke coming out of the windows, so we called the fire department. The smoke rapidly became thicker and thicker.
The firemen came and went up to check it out. It wasn't smoke after all, it was the radiator. My neighbor had aparently damaged the radiator badly enough that it was spewing steam into the room.
I wonder what is going to happen to him. I heard that his father is coming to get him. I wonder if he was on drugs or if he just doesn't have a sound mind. I heard glass breaking last night but didn't think much of it. I wonder if that was him, across the courtyard, starting to lose it, throwing plates and glasses and bottles against the wall.
Oddly, one of my (sane) neighbors told me this isn't the first time someone in the building has done this. Aparently, a guy a few apartments over went nuts and broke out all his windows, too.
