Went swimming with W at the indoor pool across the street from me yesterday. When it's nasty and cold out like it is on a day like today in the middle of February it's a real luxury to have an indoor pool so close. We floated around and talked about our paintings, how I'm struggling with abstraction, how he's excited about his new work, and how canvas is currently on sale for 20% off what it normally is over at Blick. His daughter A was there too, of course, and she explored along the edge of the pool (she's 3 and can't swim yet), calling herself Spiderman and me Superwoman. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon.
I'm playing with the idea of going back to painting with oils. Doing some straight-up, down and dirty, good old fashioned oil paintings. Ditching the acrylic and latex and sheets of paper, and breaking out the turp and some fat tubes of paint. I've just got the itch to do some really juicy abstract painting... Just a couple paintings to see if I like it, and if it's a good direction for me.
I feel a little bit like the paper/acrylic thing I'm doing has become too comfortable; routine, almost. I want to throw myself into something unfamiliar and see what happens.
I don't know. We'll see.
