The office where I was supposed to meet my real estate agent to sign the lease was dark and no one answered the door when I rang the buzzer yesterday evening. Today I asked one of my German speaking colleagues to call my real estate agent and ask what the deal was. He told her that I should sign the lease and bring it to his office, and that if he wasn't there one of his coworkers would take care of me. So I left work during lunch and did just that. He was there, took the lease, shook my hand, and told me he would email me with the details. I feel like I'm trying to do everything in the dark here, not knowing the language or how things fingers are crossed that my agent's email will tell me where I can pick up the keys and where to send my rent money.

I've asked my roommates if I can stay here until January 15th (so I'll have some buffer time while I get my new place figured out) and they wholeheartedly agreed that I should stay. Yay!
I love it here :)

Today was a long day for me, given that I had my first German class after work this evening, and I didn't get home until 9:30pm. I was hungry and didn't know what I was going to do for dinner, but that was immediately solved the moment I walked in the door. Everyone was in the kitchen – Paulo, Marco, Gaia, Alex and her boyfriend (I forget his name) – and they all ushered me in and told me that I needed to have dinner with them. It was great! Sausage, sauerkraut and polenta, with cake that Alex had made for desert. I did the dishes because I was so grateful, and we all hung out for a long time lingering over our beers. I learned a new German word as we ate, too: Spülmaschine. A Spülmaschine is a large animal with big eyes who waits patiently while everyone eats so he lick their plates afterwords dishwasher.

My lawyer emailed me yesterday to tell me that I will be able to pick up my work visa some time this week, and she is going to email me when she knows more. Everything is coming together, slowly but surely.
